Open Academy: A Higher Education Drupal Product for Departmental Websites

The university department is at the center of academic life. All across higher education, tens of thousands of departments have organized themselves to teach courses and perform research. As it turns out, most departments need a website to promote their work and each of those websites is basically the same.

Open Academy is an academic departmental website in a box. Built by Chapter Three based on our experience building websites for Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley, we have baked in critical functionality around departmental news, faculty profiles, publications and presentations, events and calendaring, courses, resources and links, video, social media, and degrees and programs. Out of the box, Open Academy lets a department get an amazing and extendible website.

I will give a quick introduction to fundamentals of php programming. Moving on to examples of how to use drupal hooks and tap into power of Drupal.

I will demonstrate examples of code and explain every step of the way. Starting with what are arrays, functions and what is the life span of a variable. What are functions some examples of php functions and some examples of Drupal's functions. How to look in to those variables at every step of the way so that you understand how a variable reach its destination.

On the module development side I will create a new block and define and place a small form. In that form the visitor can enter name of any city or zip code and our module will fetch the weather forecast from Google's api and display it in that block.

In this demo I will demonstrate how to install Drupal 7 on Amazon EC2 t1.micro EBS SPOT instance along with Ubuntu 10.10 step by step starting with the AWS Management console. I will share with the audience what the various types of instances then actually start up a spot t1.micro instance (the smallest instance type available on Amazon) with a community Ubuntu 10.10 server image. I will then install the LAMP stack on the server and get phpmyadmin and drupal installed.
I will also show how to create a back up ami of the entire Amazon instance so that in case you lose the instance you can restart a back up with the requisite machine state.

Drupal makes it possible to quickly build dynamic websites that present content in very customized ways. Creating content types and adding fields is relatively easy. However, knowing how to effectively architect a Drupal site and then implement a design on top of it is not always obvious.

Drupal comes with a couple content types, Page and Story. It allows you to add additional content types. With the Content Construction Kit module and other field plugin modules, they allow you add fields, in addition to just the Title and Body fields, to any content type. In most cases theming content is pretty straight forward. A large portion is made easy with display settings for each content type and reordering of fields. In most cases you can then style with CSS and be done with it. Often theming a field additionally requires overriding markup with a field specific template or creating a custom field formatter. Other modules, like Panels and Views are affected by the display settings of a field.

This session will cover best practices for controlling appearance and manipulating output for content, also known as theming. Attendees will leave this session knowing how to reorder fields and edit content type display settings for optimal CSS based theming. Examples will be given of when to use templates to override markup and field formatters to further control HTML output. We'll also discuss changes in fields in Drupal 7.

If you've dabbled in any part of the Drupal API, be it the theming layer, rolling your own module, or just attempting to write some PHP code to get that block working the way you want, you've probably found yourself scouring drupal.org and Google for some code you can drop into your PHP file.

Maybe you get lucky and find that what you're trying to do has been solved many times and many ways, and maybe you spend a day looking for a solution and realize you could have created your own by then.

In this session, you'll learn to stop being so dependent on drupal.org and Google, and where to look in the Drupal core and contributed modules for functions that can be overridden. We'll also cover some nice template files and API calls in Views, CCK, Date, and Calendar that are either un-documented or you probably just never uncovered during your search.

You should attend this session if:
* You've ever wondered "Where the #$%!^ does THAT HTML come from" (and how to override it)?
* You've ever wondered if there are more .tpl.php files than what Views claims to be available after clicking the Theme: Information link in a view.
* You're curious how to build a view using the Views API
* You're curious how to display CCK fields in regions other than the primary content area directly from a .tpl.php file, thus allowing you to enable your content editors to edit entire pages in one place without using Panels or other modules.

Time permitting, we may also cover template pre-process functions and other parts of the theming layer and API.

You're introduced to someone by a friend. The smalltalk begins and you know what's coming.

They ask, "What do you do?" The friend who introduced you tries to understand your explanation yet again.

You say, "Um, I do Drupal." They stare back blankly as you continue.

"...it's a content management system - you know, a CMS?"

You shudder as you try again, "...it's kinda like WordPress?" Still nothing.

Eventually you give in and explain it in a way that even your grandmother could understand: "I build websites."

Finally the look of realization comes across their face, but you feel dead inside.

This scenario is reenacted every time you meet someone. You're passionate about Drupal, but because of one reason or another you're unable to talk to people about it. Things get even more interesting if you start with your job title, in my case it's "Drupal themer and trainer." Great - at least one more term that I have to explain in gross generality.

I eventually give up and answer "I'm a web designer" to anyone who asks. Everyone does it. It makes things easier, but in today's culture it's a rather vague and unhelpful term to describe what we really do.

Intended audience:
This session walks through some 'Drupal best practices' to explain your role to people who are unfamiliar with Drupal. We'll also cover techniques for combating know-it-all's and Drupal-haters, as well as ways to explain Drupal to your friends and colleagues.

There are a number of contributed modules that take advantage of jQuery plugins and HTML5 that can take your site from stale-and-flat to interactive-and-fun.

In this session I'll highlight a few of my favorites: jCarousel, jPlayer, Views Slideshow, Views Accordion, Views Fluid Grid, Image Annotate, and Vertical Tabs that can enhance your site without the need for custom code.

I'll walk through some live examples of how to implement and administer these modules, so hopefully you can take your site from good to great.

We are working on building Hybrid Cloud for research and development purpose. Our project goal is to realize managing not only Public Cloud but also Private Cloud. We are managing Amazon EC2, and XCP by making our own Hybrid Cloud management tool by Drupal, which we call Clanavi beyond Drupal as a Content Management System. --- Drupal as a fundamental system of PaaS (Platform as a Service).
We are happy to introduce our Clanavi including its requirements, architecture design and business value. We would like to show how Drupal can define to manage multiple Cloud infrastructures and why Drupal can be used as Web Application Framework.
