Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how universities teach, work, conduct research, provide patient care, and more. And as these tools continue to evolve, it is the responsibility of everyone to understand, build, support, and govern these emerging technologies responsibly.

This talk traces AI's rapid shift from chatbot novelty to embedded infrastructure. We will explore some of the challenges facing institutions and individuals, as well as discuss what it takes to make AI adoption actually work in a university setting. The session will examine emerging themes in AI regulation, the responsible use of AI, along with the growing impact of AI on operations, development, and other technical workflows. AI tools shouldn't replace human expertise. Rather than focusing on the hype, this talk aims to offer a practical look at how Stanford is approaching AI, as both an opportunity and an institutional responsibility.

We will look at what this evolution means for developers, designers, and technical teams, including the rise of vibe coding, the move toward agent orchestration, and why knowing when not to use AI matters now more than ever.
